A Brief History of the Anchorage Senior Center

The Center is celebrating its 40th Anniversary of service in the Anchorage Bowl area in 2023. It opened a new facility in 1983 and added a new wing in 2002 to accommodate the growth in programs as well as the growth of people over 55 years of age in our community. There are approximately 2,500 members from throughout the Anchorage area. The beautiful brick building is centrally located between Downtown Anchorage and Mid-town at 1300 East 19th Avenue. It is situated on five acres of land with ample parking plus People Mover bus service and door-to-door Anchor-Rides transportation. The Center and the surrounding grounds are owned by the Municipality of Anchorage. The Center is accredited by the National Institute of Senior Centers and the National Council on Aging. There are only 188 Senior Centers in the nation that have achieved this high standard of accreditation.
